Natural Cures for Depression
and the Five Elements

Chi Kung movements are natural cures for depression because they activate and cleanse our energetic systems.

This page describes movements from Chi Kung that you can use to balance your Five Element energies. It is a 'body n mind' approach, much like smiling to feel happier is proven to work.

The Five Elements are from Oriental Medicine - the oldest form of healing known to humankind. I have found enormous wisdom from understanding life through the lenses of the Five Elements.

Oriental Medicine is based on the principle that life force energy flows along pathways, called meridians, and through the organs. The meridians/organs are divided into the Five Element categories of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Each Element has "personalities" or qualities.

For example, the Heart Meridian is in the category of Fire Element. Its qualities are bonding, feeling safe in relationships, laughter, and playing with others.

These Five Element Movements and Sounds help get your positive life force energy moving again. They are natural cures for depression in a way that includes all of you, different from mental or medical approaches.

Wood Element Movement

The Wood Element contains the Liver Meridian and is about hope: growth, life purpose, goals, and actions. And, when blocked, the emotion is anger.

Fire Element Movement
The Fire Element contains the Heart Meridian and is about bonding, feeling safe in relationships, laughter, and playing with others.

The Fire Element feeds, is the "mother" of the next Element in the circle...Earth.

Earth Element Movement
The Earth Element is about being nurtured and supported. This movement/sound helps you assimilate your experiences and distributes nurturing energy to where it is needed.

When you are depressed, you might feel uncentered or ungrounded, lack abundance, struggle with changes and transitions, and feel unsupported in life.

Your Earth Element Energy can become weakened by too many changes or painful transitions.

The "dark side" of Earth Element Energy is losing your "SELF" in efforts to provide care and nurture to others. The addage to "put the oxygen mask on yourself first" is another one of those "natural cures for depression", especially when your nature is to care for others.

Metal Element Movement

The Earth Element in turn is the mother to the Metal Element.

As the Earth Element is associated with "mother" energy, Metal is associated with "father" energy.

When you are depressed, you can feel uninspired or lack self-respect. You might not approve of yourself, you may not give your best or live your truth.

The movement for the Metal Element releases grief and reconnects you to the Divine within and without.

Water Element Movement
The Water Element contains the kidneys, and is about power and fear, depth, listening, and calmness.

The Water Element feeds the Wood Element.
