Child Abandonment Issues and How You Can Help
Child abandonment issues CAN be helped If you are in a close relationship with a child with abandonment issues, there are ways that you can help them. Understand that their experience of abandonment is like a tripped circuit or blown fuse in their mental, emotional, physical, and spirit systems. A lot of their "higher power" has been shut down...literally not available to them. But this can be greatly improved, and it isn't necessarily difficult.
The abandonment issues the child demonstrates can show up like scary emotional problems. And, this "scariness" can get worse AND can wreak havoc over a life time, not matter how much effort and good intentions are put forth. However, our brains, and especially a child's brain, is "plastic" and flexible in very deep and very powerful ways.
Basically, child abandonment issues stem from events that are totally beyond the child's ability to name, understand, process or resolve.
The child's survival (fight/flight) brain has been activated to such an extent that his/her higher brain centers are pre-empted, by-passed, or "cut-off". The good news is that higher brain centers are what nature intends for us. The pre-frontal cortex (behind the forehead going to behind the eyes) is large and powerful and designed to "lead" the lower, reptilian fight/flight brain areas.
When you help a child with abandonment issues, all you are doing is bringing nature back to it's healthy, normal state.
"Imagination disposes of everything; it creates beauty, justice, and happiness, which are everything in this world."
~Blaise Pascal, philosopher, and physicist in 17th century France. His contributions to both scientific and religious thought have had a lasting effect upon the world.
You can help by activating a child's imagination. (This helps adults also, I use it all the time with clients). If it sounds too easy, too good to be true, think about child therapists. They use play therapy, stories, role-playing, art, theatre, movies, and likewise to help children.
